Weingut Georg Fromm: Burgundy and New Zealand as models
During our beautiful visit in the Graubünden we met Georg Fromm in his beautiful tasting room, which provides a view on the one side to the mountainous region of the Bündner Herrschaft and the other to the oak barrels lined up behind a glass wall.
Wine has been flowing through the veins of the Fromm family since several generations; in 1912 Barthelemy Fromm was already awarded a gold medal for his red wine Schöpfi-Wingert at the Swiss Hospitality Industry Exhibition in Zurich.
Georg Fromm took over the estate at a very young age, and if the way wine is made has changed a lot, the land where the vines grow has remained the same. Over the years the winemaker has led the family business with an innovative spirit and an acute sense of harmony as a result his wines are among the best in the Graubünden.
In 1991, after a three-month trip to New Zealand, Georg and his wife were so fascinated by the nature and the climate that they decided to establish a second winery down under in Blenan, in the Marlborough region. For a while they became what is commonly known as "flying vintners”.
Georg was as successful in New Zealand as in Switzerland, but today the Blenan estate was sold and Georg Fromm is back on his land of origin where he focuses on his wine. Sensitive and constantly open to change, he does not hesitate to innovate because what ultimately matters to him is the finesse and subtlety of wine.
As for his wines and like many other winemakers in this region, the presentation follows a Burgundy estate approach with one difference here, Georg Fromm names his wines by the vineyards names: Selfi, Fidler and Schöpfi.
